The most important Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire trick I have found, and it has not been well-publicized, is to practice at the Hall of Kings.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
General Notes

bulletDon't start the Rites Of Rulership until you are as rich and "Bad" as you want to be.
(Can you say PRACTICE, boys and girls?)
bulletThere is no penalty I can find for taking the time to smell the flowers.  And the money.
bulletBecome as rich as you wish BEFORE the Rites begin. You'll be busy after that.
bulletIf you are playing at high difficulty, be REALLY BAD.
bulletDo all the fun things BEFORE the Rites begin.
bulletEat when you are hungry.
bulletYou get 1 free meal per day, at Ann's Inn. Eat early and this is enough to last till the next morning.
bulletEnter the Hall Of Kings...but only just inside the front door. TADA! Full mana, full health, full stamina, no waiting. Cool!  It is open 5AM-8PM.
bulletPractice.    Hit <C>haracter Screen to see the improvement.
bulletPractice Shadow-boxing to increase abilities and skills.   Hold down the <F>ight key (actually Attack 1), or the <G> Attack 2 key.
bulletPractice Spell skills to increase many abilities.  Put each spell on the tool bar, one at a time. Hold down the hotkey for that item/spell.
bulletPractice Sneaking to improve many abilities, and the Stealth skill if you have it.
bulletAnn says your room's rent is paid for the month, but never asks for money. I have stayed a LOOONG time.
bulletTalk to everyone.
bulletIf they say something unusual, you may want to listen, then leave and COME BACK AT ONCE, and talk to them again.  Sometimes they will have several things to say, and you only get one set at a time.
bulletDon't carry things you don't need.  That way you can gather more loot before returning to sell it or store it.
bulletThe chest in your room really is a safe place to put things you want to sell later, and it is quick to get in and out.
bulletWeirdings have cool loot.  They can often be found late at night if you wander the island.  Save Early, Save Often.
bulletIf you want the really cool weapons/armor that don't crop up in the hands of Weirdings, the Weaponsmith will have them late in the game.  Be rich, you'll need it.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Guide To Spells

The manual says that some spells are useful to practice.  It also notes that spell skill affects "power, duration, and range"
Just point the mouse at a spell in your spell screen (Hit the <S>pell key) to see your skill level in that spell.

Levitate REALLY nice for some things. No need to practice that I can find.
Open Gotta have it? I am unsure if it is worth practicing. I used it a LOT as a mage.
RIP Can't be practiced, no need to practice that I can find. Really nice for sleeping on the road.
It can save MANY trips to the Inn.
Shrink Shrink anything that will be annoying to kill...but you have to fight something to use it, so you can't practice.
But, it won't work in the arena,
And it won't work on the dragon.
Calm Useful if you don't want to just kill everything in sight.   Or run from it, as the case may be.
Never used it. I finished with my honor at 500 anyway.  Others speak highly of it...
Dazzle Never used it. Others speak highly of it...
Fascination Never used it. Others speak highly of it...
Hide 2nd most important spell for me.
ALWAYS hide in combat. Practice to 500 early.
Zap Zap your weapon every time. I think this is the best way to use magic for offense. Practice to 500 early.
BE AWARE, a Zapped powerful weapon will DESTROY some enemies, so you can't search them.
Aura Absolutely essential for FIGHTING the undead. If you plan to, then practice to 500 early... before you need it.
But you can just run past them...
Protection The single most important spell for me. Always cast protection in combat.   Practice to 500 early.
Resistance When you need it, you need it BAD...practice to 500. That Dragon has severe bad breath.
Reversal Nice but not too important.  Run fast and the mages miss almost every time.
Boom I used this a lot because it is easy to do before combat.   If you want to REALLY hurt something, drop a bunch these skulls where it is going to walk.
BE CAREFUL! Once you toss it it hangs around, gradually drifting higher and higher.   IT TAKES DAYS.  Bear this in mind during practice.
Dragon Fire I am told you can get this spell if you save Katrina from Hades.
I left her there, so I never got this spell.  Others speak highly of it.
Flame Dart CRITICAL for defeating Hydra.  I practiced to 500 before I got to the Hydra.  I never used it anywhere else much.
Force Bolt No need to practice that I can find.  You need it or throwing ability to get to Science Island.
Frost Bite 3rd most important spell for me.   The only offensive spell I use heavily.  Practice to 500 early.
Lightning Ball Never found much use for it...
Thermonuclear Blast I guess this is one way to kill the Dragon. But why?
No need to practice this one ;-)
Whirlwind My Thief got this spell by asking Erasmus about magic spells on day 3.  I used it to "Practice Up" my Magic ability.
Others speak highly of it...

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Practice - Consider beginning the game by PRACTICING:

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Practicing at the Hall Of Kings

bulletEnter the Hall Of Kings...but only just inside the front door. TADA! Full mana, full health, full stamina, no waiting. Cool!
bulletThe gates close promptly at 8PM or the first time you leave after 8PM. (I assume so everyone can go to the arena?)
bulletThey open at 5AM. If you want to "Practice-up", be sure to go to sleep in time to be there by 5AM.
bulletOnce you enter the hall, IMMEDIATELY back out (press the back key).
bulletYou will find yourself outside the gate, facing away. Practice.
bulletWhen your mana (or stamina) is exhausted, use the back key until the guard tells you that you may enter the hall.
bulletHit the space bar instantly, all that yack time counts against you, and is boring.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Practicing Spell skills at the Hall Of Kings

Using this technique, you can be an expert at every "practicable" spell by the 2nd day.  Cool.

bulletPut each spell on the tool bar, one at a time. Hold down the hotkey for that item/spell.
bulletThere is no one there who will be hurt, and those guards must be the most unflappable folks in the universe...they just don't care!
bulletBUT (very big but), if you are practicing your Frost Bite, DO NOT try to reenter the King's Hall to recharge until the spell COMPLETELY ends.
bulletThis is because your character will turn and walk forward up the path, hitting the guard with the spell as he turns.
bulletThis is a fatal no-no, they will kill you eventually. You must not be SEEN attacking a guard, even by the guard, even if you kill everybody there.
bulletAND be careful where you toss those BOOM spells, they won't go away, but just gradually float up, day-by-day, until you can safely walk under them.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Shadow Boxing

bulletTake off all your gear, and press "F" or "G" to fight. The guards don't care about this, either.  VERY calm guards.
bulletShadow boxing increases Strength, Agility, Vitality, Luck, Offense (and Accrobatics, if you have it).
bulletI treated this just as I did the magic spells, drilling in front of the Hall of Kings.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Other Important Activities, Factoids, and Things

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Sneaking

bulletThis is most valuable if you have the Stealth skill.
bulletFOR EVERYONE, it increases Intelligence(really), Agility, Luck (and Stealth, if you have it).
bulletYou may choose to sneak everywhere, early on. It is slow, and looks goofy, but I practiced up to 500. Once you have your stealth up as high as you have the patience for, you can stop this nonsense and get on with life.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Running

bulletI set the default and run everywhere I don't sneak. There is no need to walk that I can find, and running builds up your stamina faster.
bulletOnce you are carrying a lot of junk (like all the stamina, health, and mana you care to pack), this becomes more difficult.
I run everywhere anyway, and just keep gulping stamina.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Walking

bulletThe only time I walk is when I want to sight-see, or when I am training on the...

Treadmill - There is a treadmill in the Adventurer's Guild.  You don't have to join to use it.
bulletRun on it to increase Strength faster. Double-click the treadmill to run, no matter what the default.
bulletWalk on it to increase Vitality faster. Single-click the treadmill to walk, no matter what the default.
bulletYou may rest standing up <C>haracter screen, <REST> button, or go sit in the chair.  Either way, resting takes an hour.
In a hurry?  Money no object?  Just keep gulping stamina, and roll on.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
To build up Defense Skill

bulletI did not find Defense to be especially valuable.
bulletIf you never let your opponents hit you much (like, they die early in the fight), or if you have money/mana for healing, it won't matter.
bulletYou must have an actual opponent.  So you can:
bulletJust Fight. You'll get better over time. Save Early, Eave Often
bulletFight easy monsters, Defending more than you need to.
bulletOr you can spend money on healing (or mana if you can Heal - I never could).
bulletOr you can improve safely by...

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Fighting in the arena

bulletYou can make a lot of money, here.
bulletYou can also get "free" practice in Defense, since you cannot really die.
Just keep Defending and gulping health until you are tired of this drill.
bulletIf you win, you win prize money, and the bet payouts can be nice.
bulletIf you are NOT honest, you can bet against yourself, then throw the match.  Boo.  Hiss.  My Thief is not honest.  He made beaucoup bucks.
bulletIf you want to be sure to win the week you are champion, you should have good armor and weapons, and high strength, offense, and maybe defense. Elsa will...

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Setting the Difficulty

bulletI set it low for one game. It did not make any difference to my enjoyment, since I found the combat pretty simple-minded in this game. It appears to affect nothing else but the wheel of fortune.
bulletSetting it high means more monsters to loot (more $$ for you), and more fighting experience. Save Early, Save Often.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Fighting

bulletI used the mouse for offense except for shadow boxing for practice, when I used <F>ight.
bulletI did use the keyboard for "Defend". Remember to turn to face your opponent to defend!

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Skills to start with

bulletI have tried several ways.  I can't say for certain which skills make the most fun. Please yourself!
bulletJust don't spend points on Swimming. It is the only skill you can learn in the game itself. You may borrow or steal the book at the Famouse Adventurer's house.  I don't know any reason to steal it.  It did neither good nor harm I could see.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
Weapons and Armor

bulletYou need to purchase very little, or nothing, unless you are impatient.
bulletI did buy a magic spear because I wanted to go to Atlantis THEN and had already sold the one I got early in the game, not liking spears.
bulletI also bought a magic helm, because I never got one in combat. It think this is bad luck, though. Others say they got one fighting.
bulletYou will quickly get a shield, sword, spear in the field.
bulletWeirdings are good sources for a Magic Sword and Magic Chain Armor, for instance.
bulletYou will also find arrows in the field, but no bows. You see the bows, the enemy has them... but you can't have one.
bulletLate in the game, the Weaponsmith will have some new stock.
bulletIf you want a DragonSlayer or Ice Diamond sword, save up your pennies. DragonSlayer has a value of 10,000 Gold. I bought neither.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire
So you want to be VERY VERY VERY rich

bulletDon't buy things you don't need.
bulletSet the play to easy and win a lot at the wheel of fortune at the Dead Parrot.  There is a hard upper limit, though, because the game becomes essentially unwinnable eventually.
bulletSet the play AS HARD AS YOU CAN STAND, so you get lots of monsters to loot.  Save Early, Save Often.
bulletLoot everything you kill, and "Magic Magnet" the loot to the chest unless you need to go to town.  This saves travel time.
bulletKill everything that has loot.  Ignore everything that doen't, after you are sufficiently "Practiced Up".
bulletReturn to areas where there are profitable monsters that respawn (not all do).  Just leave the area and return at once (back key).
bulletEach time you return, there will be more of them (there is a limit), so Save Early, Save Often.
bulletBuy only the food you will need for your trips.
bulletUsually none for simple loot-hunting.
bulletIf you must buy food, buy Gyros, they seem to be the best compromise of cost/weight.
bulletEat only at the Inn, once per day, free. Hit the space bar, her descriptions of the food are BORING. I HATE the eating sound effects.
bulletRest, sleep, or "Magic Magnet" to the Inn instead of healing yourself, so you don't have to buy healing/mana.
bulletNever buy stamina pills and health pills, they are too heavy and you should loot a TON of them from dead monsters.
bulletUse stamina and health pills up before your purchased potions, they are too heavy to keep, and they are free (loot).
bulletYou can avoid annoying bargaining by putting loot into your chest, and loading up with 1 type of item only to go to the merchant.
bulletMost of the loot will go to the Centaur Weaponsmith. It got annoying to bargain with him each time, so I just took his first offer. This is not the path to greatest wealth.
bulletYou can cheat at the arena. It is a sure thing if you bet against yourself and throw the match.
bulletDon't be late for an Arena match.  You lose, and the bet board complains for the rest of the week.
bulletBet late (on the betting board upstairs in the Dead Parrot) if you want to know the odds, they change over time.
bulletThere is no hurry until you start the Rites.
bulletBecome as rich as you wish BEFORE the Rites begin. You'll be busy after that.

Quest For Glory V:Dragon Fire

bulletGive flowers to all the ladies who will take them. They are in a window-box of the Apothecary.
bulletGive money and flowers to Salla, the Katta musician.
bulletDo good deeds.
bulletDon't kill people.

Character type

Thief This game seems made for the Thief. Lots of things a Thief gets to do that no one else does. I have not finished as a Thief, but have played a lot.
Paladin You must import the Paladin to play. I have not finished as a Paladin, but have played some. Nice sword. Neat spells no one else has.   Too "nice" for me.
"Kill Them All, Let God Sort Them Out." is more my style.
Wizard I played the Wizard and won, with an honor of 500 and TONS of money.
Fighter I played only a little while as a Fighter.
