Why to we say nine-one-one instead of nine-eleven? I read an interesting note about this, long ago, and I think it is important enough to share. Think about it: If a small child hears nine-one-one, every time, they will know 9-1-1 and how to find it very early, usually even before Kindergarten. But, if the child hears nine-eleven, they may be unable to deal with the idea of finding an eleven on the phone, until much later. Scary as it may sound, this can happen to adults, especially under great stress, and most especially if they are in an altered mental state, such as panic. Bear in mind too that many, many people of limited mental capacity might hear. Everyone who can dial 9-1-1 in an emergency might one day be able to save a life, or make a tremendous difference in a victim's quality of life, even if they are able to do no more than dial 3 digits on a phone, no matter how limited their capacities may be. So, make it a point to always say nine-one-one. It's a good idea. |
